Elliot Peters has been named California Lawyer "Attorney of the Year" and listed as a "Northern California Super Lawyer." He is listed in "Best Lawyers in America" and in the Chambers USA guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business.
Elliot litigates all manner of complex civil and white collar criminal cases. He has tried more than forty criminal and civil cases in both state and federal courts.
In commercial matters, Elliot represents numerous national law firms, businesses and executives in employment and dissolution matters, high tech companies in trade secret cases, and a variety of investment companies in securities-related litigation.
Elliot's recent criminal cases include successfully defending at trial an investment banker accused of obstructing justice, a lawyer accused of billing fraud, a drug company executive accused of paying kickbacks to a doctor, and a lobbyist prosecuted by an independent counsel. He also represented a large, public forest products company facing a federal indictment in Denver, Colorado, United States v. Louisiana-Pacific Corp., 106 F.3d 345 (10th Cir. 1997). He has obtained reversals of criminal convictions for a fruit company executive accused of double-invoicing fraud, United States v. Thomas, 32 F.3d 418 (9th Cir. 1994), and for Oriental rug dealers accused of smuggling Persian carpets, United States v. Noushfar, 78 F.3d 1442 (9th Cir. 1996).
From 1987 to 1991, Elliot served as an assistant United States attorney in the Southern District of New York. In 1991 he received the Department of Justice Director's Medal, recognizing him as one of the most effective federal prosecutors in the country. Among the significant cases Elliot prosecuted is United States v. Paccione, 949 F.2d 1183 (2d Cir. 1991), cert. denied 505 U.S. 1220 (1992), a racketeering case concerning New York's trash hauling industry.
Elliot is a former law clerk to United States District Judge Whitman Knapp of the Southern District of New York. He is a 1985 graduate of the New York University School of Law, where he was champion of the school's Moot Court Competition and received the prize as the outstanding student in a clinical program of legal study. He is a graduate of Yale University (Bachelor of Arts philosophy), cum laude (1980) where he played four years on the Yale tennis team.
